House ratifies protocol

Presenting the protocol to the House for ratification, Justice and Legal Affairs Minister Patrick Chinamasa said Cabinet approved that it be ratified in the framework of African Regional Intellectual Property Organisation. ARIPO is an inter-governmental body comprising 18-member states that include Zimbabwe formed in 1976 to safeguard intellectual property rights.
“The major objective of the Swakopmund Protocol is to legally protect and promote the economic and social exploitation of traditional knowledge systems and expression of folklore for the benefit of holders of such traditional knowledge and traditional cultural expression,” said Minister Chinamasa.
The Swakopmund Protocol was signed in Swakopmund, Namibia, in August 2010.  Minister Chinamasa said Zimbabwe had rich traditional knowledge and traditional cultural expression that needed protection.
