SEASONED long distance runner, Tatenda Hove, shrugged off challenges from scores of other athletes to win the 10th edition of the Beitbridge Mayor’s Anti-Litter Half marathon.
Hundreds of athletes took part in the event, which is a unique blend of sport and civic duty.
It is meant to raise awareness of the need to maintain a safe and clean environment within the border town and major highways leading to Bulawayo and Harare.
Stakes were very high as scores of athletes from all over the country registered to celebrate the 10 years of ‘running against rubbish’, 10 years of community mobilisation and 10 years of sending a powerful message that a clean environment is a collective responsibility.
Delegates from various urban local authorities and the Musina Municipality of South Africa took part.
The race included a 21,1km race, a 10km race, and a 5km power walk. Hove crossed the finishing line in 1 hour 2 minutes and 55 seconds. In second position was Mthokozisi Mhlanga who arrived home in 1 hour, 3 minutes and 5 seconds.
Jonathan Chinyoka came third in 1 hour, 3 minutes and 40 seconds. Annie Chirisa crossed the 21.1km finishing line first at 1 hour, 18 minutes and 38 seconds in the senior women category.
Emelda Nyamusvosvo finished second in 1 hour, 20 minutes and 30 seconds and Tatenda Chichangani was third in 1 hour, 23 minutes and 22 seconds.
