ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) has undoubtedly transformed the way we live our lives, and education is no exception.
The integration of AI tools in schools is a move towards revolutionising education and prepare 21st century learners for a future that is increasingly reliant on technology.
With AI-powered tools that are ideal for research and writing, learners have easier access to information than ever before.
AI tools are critical for gathering information and generating ideas.
However, these tools may have a negative impact on learners when they rely too much on them as they work on their homework or project-based assignments.
It is important for learners to be cautious and informed when using these AI tools to ensure an effective learning experience.
One of the main concerns with AI is that it blurs the line between original work and borrowed content.
As learners become accustomed to relying on technology to provide them with information, they may struggle to differentiate between their own thoughts and those of others.
This can result in unintentional plagiarism, where learners inadvertently use someone else’s ideas without giving proper acknowledgement, as they simply copy and paste information from online sources.
This is academic dishonesty that may have serious consequences.
AI tools are not foolproof.
They have potential biases and discrimination that can be embedded in their algorithms.
AI systems are designed and “trained” by humans, and they can “inherit” the biases and prejudices of their creators.
Learners should always verify the credibility of AI-generated ideas to avoid falling prey to misinformation.
The convenience of such learning tools can also lead to laziness among learners.
Instead of exerting effort in conducting thorough research and come up with their own opinions, learners may opt to take shortcuts by using AI-generated information whenever they are given work by their instructors.
This, not only undermines the learning process but also reduces the value of education.
Academic integrity and originality should be highly regarded in harnessing the power of AI in learning.
Relying too heavily on predetermined answers and technology-driven solutions to academic questions might reduce the learner’s ability to think creatively and solve problems independently.
The use of AI in education may limit opportunities for schoolchildren to engage in open-ended and explanatory learning.
AI algorithms filter and curate content for learners and this may divert exposure away from a diverse range of perspectives.
As a matter of fact, learners may end up with a narrow world view and this can hinder their ability to think critically on complex academic issues.
Learners who are accustomed to relying on technology systems to provide them with answers may struggle to think critically and analytically when faced with examination questions that require application of knowledge. This can ultimately hinder performance in exams and impact their overall academic success.
While AI can be a valuable tool for learners to enhance their academic skills and knowledge, it is important to be mindful of the potential negative consequences of over-relying on it.
Learners should strive to strike a balance between utilising AI tools as a resource and developing their own critical thinking, problem-solving and study skills to ensure success during exams and life beyond.
