IN a rare maintenance claim, a Mutare man last week approached the court claiming maintenance from his ex-wife. Didymus Zange sent the gallery into roars of laughter after he told the court that he wanted money to maintain their two children from his ex-wife. Zange appeared before Mutare magistrate, Mrs Yeukai Chigodora last week, claiming $40 for the upkeep of their two children from his ex-wife, Portia Chitsero.
In his breakdown, Zange said $30 was for fees and $10 was for food and clothes.
Zange told the court that his ex-wife was neglecting their two children hence she was supposed to contribute towards their upkeep.
Zange said: “Your Worship, I pray that my ex-wife pays maintenance. I am the one staying with the children since she abandoned us. I can provide my children with all basic needs, but she should also contribute money for the upkeep of their two children. She is earning $105 per month and $40 is enough for the children.”
However, it is when Chitsero told the court that they had just separated for two weeks after an argument.
Chitsero said: “We used to have arguments many times. The marriage was sour and I decided that we parted ways two weeks ago. This time he chased me away and told me to leave the children. He told me that he paid lobola and I had no right to take his children away. Even though I stay nearby the home he denies me permission to meet the children so I don’t know why I should pay maintenance.”
However, Mrs Chigodora adjourned the matter to March 4.
