ORGANISERS of the inaugural Beitbridge Mayoras Half Marathon scheduled for 30 July in the border town have announced the prize package with close to 100 athletes having registered so far.
The organisers expect 180 athletes to take part in the race that is a brainchild of the Beitbridge Town Council and the Beitbridge Athletics Board.
a?Athletes that will take part in the five kilometre fun walk will pick up litter along the way as the race is meant to educate the public on littering. The theme of the race is a?Running against littera?.A The 21- kilometre race will start from Lutumba Business Centre and end in the central business district while the 10 kilometre race will start at Chicago Village and also finish in the central business district,a? said Beitbridge Town Council secretary Loud Ramakgapola.
A record 500 vehicles and 10 000 travellers pass through the Beitbridge border post on a daily basis making littering a huge concern for the local authority. Registration is pegged at $3 for adults and $1 for school children.
a?We will request five secondary schools around Beitbridge to send their athletics teams for the race. So far we have not registered notable athletes but we expect a huge turnout for the race,a? he said.
