adminJesa Ganure of Mashingaidze village under Chief Ndanga and her niece Chipo Mapurebwe (19) sustained severe burns all over their bodies. They escaped through the window after their kitchen hut had been doused with petrol and set on fire by Lazarus Mhloro (32) of the same village.
Mhloro, who was allegedly once married to Chipo, accused Ganure of bewitching her niece resulting in her experiencing continuous menstruation.
Masvingo police spokesperson Superintendent Tineyi Matake on Friday said Ganure and Chipo were admitted at Ndanga Mission Hospital where they are receiving treatment.
Supt Matake said Mhloro went into hiding soon after the incident and is still at large.
“The two (Ganure and Chipo) are currently admitted at Ndanga Mission Hospital where they are receiving treatment after they sustained severe burns all over their bodies and their condition is stable,” said Supt Matake.
“The suspect fled after the incident and is still at large.’’ Supt Matake said Mhloro would be charged with attempted murder.
Mhloro was allegedly once married to Chipo and the two separated after the latter started to menstruate continuously.
Chipo went to stay with Ganure at her homestead.
On Monday of last week Mhloro stormed Ganure’s homestead at night and found her sleeping in a kitchen hut with Chipo, police said.
He allegedly forced himself into the hut and accused Ganure of bewitching his ex-wife Chipo, leading to their divorce.
Mhloro, said Supt Matake, sprinkled the fireplace with about 10 litres of petrol sparking a bonfire before he fled from the crime scene.
He said Ganure and Chipo managed to escape through the window but they were severely burnt.
Ganure also dislocated her left elbow after landing awkwardly from the window.
Mhloro allegedly fled and left a note indicating his intention to commit suicide over his divorce with Chipo, said Supt Matake.
