A HWANGE woman who cheated death when her brave husband wrestled her from the jaws of a crocodile has sadly lost the fight for life, dying in the operating theatre days after the savage attack.
Virginia Nyoni (45) was snatched by a crocodile while fetching water from the Zambezi River near her home in Msuna-Kanjeza village on May 2. With no borehole in the area, villagers rely on the deadly river. On that fateful day, it turned into a nightmare.
Her husband, Oliver Nyoni, heroically pulled her from the reptile’s grip in a dramatic struggle that stunned villagers. But the deep, gory wounds were too much. She was transferred from Hwange Colliery Hospital to Mpilo Central Hospital, where she died in the theatre on Thursday.
“We have lost her. It is so tragic,” confirmed area councillor Lethukuthula Ngwenya. “She died during surgery. The whole village is in shock. I spoke to her on Wednesday and it looked so promising.”
Virginia leaves behind six children and a heartbroken husband who risked his life to save her.
Meanwhile, villagers remain uneasy after a single crocodile was shot near the scene — but many don’t believe it was the killer beast.
“The real croc is still out there,” one villager warned. “It’s only a matter of time before it strikes again.”
