A Harare man says he has not seen the child his ex-wife is demanding maintenance for.
Aaron Mutema was taken to court by his ex-wife, Abigail Tauya, who is demanding US$490 for the upkeep of their 10-year-old child.
Abigail said she wanted the court to compel Aaron to take care of his child.
‘‘I am demanding this amount because this man has not been helping me with anything towards the welfare of our child. Our child is of ill-health and the medication is too expensive,’’ she said.
Aaron offered US$20.
‘‘I am currently unable to work and surviving under welfare. I do not even know nor have I seen the child before, and l believe he is not even mine.’’
‘‘I do confirm I was employed, but l am no longer able to perform the duties I used to do.’’
Abigail said Aaron’s offer was a joke.
‘‘I oppose because I am the one who is always in hospital with the child.”
Magistrate Ayanda Dhlamini advised Aaron to go for a DNA test, but in the meantime he should pay something for the upkeep of the child.
She ordered him to pay US$50 as maintenance.
