TATENDA MUKURUVA believes his growth in the United States has prepared him for another opportunity with the Warriors.
He insists he remains determined to become Zimbabwe’s number one.
The former Dynamos shot-stopper, who signed a one-year contract extension with USL Championship side Detroit City for the 2026 season in April, says representing Zimbabwe remains one of his biggest ambitions.
“Representing Zimbabwe has always been one of the greatest honours of my career,” said Mukuruva. “Wearing the national team jersey is something I will never take for granted.
“If the opportunity comes again, I would be proud to represent my country and give everything I have
“Right now, my focus is on performing consistently for my club because that’s the best way to earn opportunities at the international level,” he said.
Mukuruva, who has featured in 12 matches and kept four clean sheets this season, believes his experience in American football has helped transform him into a more complete goalkeeper.
“The biggest difference is the pace and physical intensity of the game in the United States.
“Matches are played at a very high tempo with quick transitions, and goalkeepers are expected to be comfortable with the ball at their feet and contribute to the team’s build-up play.
“In Zimbabwe, the game can be more tactical and technical depending on the opposition.
“Playing in both environments has helped me become a more complete goalkeeper because I have had to adapt to different styles and demands.”
Since moving to the United States in 2019, Mukuruva established himself as a key figure at Michigan Stars FC, captaining the side to the NISA League Championship in 2022 before joining Detroit City.
The 31-year-old believes he is still improving and is committed to refining every aspect of his game.
“As a goalkeeper, I’m always looking to sharpen my distribution, decision making and commanding of my area. “My advice to young Zimbabwean goalkeepers is simple, be patient, stay disciplined and never stop learning.
“Goalkeeping demands resilience because there will be setbacks, criticism and difficult moments.
“Stay committed, trust the process and, most importantly, believe in yourself. Confidence, backed by hard work, can take you a long way.” he said.
The Warriors currently face a goalkeeping crisis as the trio of Marley Tavaziva, Elvis Chipezeze, and Martin Mapisa are yet to fully cement their position between the posts.
The recent return of Washington Arubi to the domestic top flight, turning out for CAPS United, and now Mukuruva’s revelation, is due to give Kaitano Tembo and his technical team more options between the posts.
This could prove crucial as Zimbabwe have AFCON Qualifiers on the horizon.
The Warriors have been placed in Group E alongside DR Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Sierra Leone in the qualifiers that kick off in September.
