Illegal panner trapped to death

AN illegal gold panner from Penhalonga was last weekend trapped to death in a mine shaft.

Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa, said incessant effort by colleagues to rescue Onias Njerere (34) were fruitless as he died within minutes after the incident.

“He could not be saved. We urge people not to engage in illegal mining activities since it is risky and a criminal offence,” he said.

The incident happened at DTZ-OZGEO mining shaft around 2pm. Njerere was illegally mining gold together with Obert Mupebvu (35) of the same area when the incident happened.

He entered into a shaft which suddenly collapsed and trapped him.

Mupebvu and other panners tried to rescue him to no avail.
