LIVESTOCK farmers in Manicaland have been urged to implement drought mitigation strategies so as to reduce its effects and curb losses in cattle production.
Chipinge District livestock officer, Dr John Mwandifura said sustainable strategies such as hay cutting and baling for supplementary feed help to mitigate the impact of droughts.
“Owing to the climate change we are experiencing, as district livestock specialists we are encouraging farmers to make hay. It is ideal for them to start that process now for their own benefit in the long run in the event of a drought, said Dr Mwandifura.
He added that crop residues are a good type of feed to supplement for cattle during drought periods.
With the planting season still on, Dr Mwandifura also called on farmers to plant legume plants for feed as a way of enhancing animal nutrition.
Livestock production in the province is an important source of income as many rural households rely on it for livelihoods.
