IS this the star we have been waiting for?
Wolverhampton midfielder, Tawanda Chirewa, says he is settling well in the Warriors camp and is looking forward to making a positive contribution to the team.
He is part of the squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and South Africa.
The Warriors face Lesotho on Friday in Johannesburg, before taking on South Africa on Tuesday, in Bloemfontein.
This is the first time the 20-year-old is in camp with the Warriors.
“It’s good to be here. This is my first camp with the lads. Just proud and excited to be here and looking forward to the games. Everyone has been good to me.
“I can’t complain, it’s good to be here. I can’t wait to play. My best position is number 10 behind the striker. I can play forward, try to get goals and assist as well.
“On our day I feel like we can have a competitive game so I’m not really worried. We will just focus on our training, listen to our manager and, hopefully, come Friday and Tuesday, we deliver,” said Chirewa.
He made his Wolves senior team debut this past season.
He is part of a growing list of Warriors prospects coming to the fore in Europe.
He featured in 10 matches for Wolves, including eight league appearances, starting just in one.
He made two appearances in the FA Cup.
His last league match appearance came on May 4 against Manchester City.
Chirewa is one of seven England-based players who were included in the Warriors squad, together with Brendan Galloway, Shane Maroodza, Andy Rinemhota, Tivonge Rushesha, Joey Phuthi and Leicester City’s Tawanda Maswanhise.
Before joining Wolves, at 16 years and 31 days, Chirewa became Ipswich Town’s second youngest first-team player when he made his debut in the EFL Trophy tie at Colchester in November 2019.
He signed his first professional contract with Ipswich Town in November 2020, when he was 17.
The Warriors held a training session yesterday morning at the Wits University Stadium.
All the players called up were present, except for the injured Brendan Galloway and Teenage Hadebe, who was expected to report for camp yesterday.
