FORMER Warriors captain Knowledge Musona says he will end his playing career at Scottland after joining the ambitious Premiership newcomers yesterday.
It becomes Musona’s first professional club on the domestic scene having joined South African giants Kaizer Chiefs straight from the Aces Youth Academy.
He returns home from the Saudi Pro League where he turned out for Al Akhdoud and will wear the number 8 jersey at Scottland.
Also joining Musona at Scottland is exciting Highlanders winger, Mafios Chihweta, who also put pen to paper yesterday after staying behind in the capital after Bosso’s league match against CAPS United at Rufaro on Sunday.
The mid-season transfer window closes on Thursday. Musona was unveiled at half-time of their 1-0 win over Yadah to move into second place on the latest Castle Lager Premier Soccer League standings.
Yesterday’s win moved Scottland to 43 points from 23 matches, just a point behind leaders and reigning champions, Simba Bhora.
Striker and club’s leading scorer, Tymon Machope, rose from the bench to score the only goal of a chilly afternoon.
It was Scottland’s fourth successive win, restoring them into the title race. But the story of the afternoon was Musona, who is the third highest scorer for the senior national team.
“It feels great to join Scottland, I am looking forward to this opportunity to come back home and bring my last years of my playing career.”
Asked what made him settle for Scottland ahead of many other offers from Saudi Arabia and South Africa, Musona said: “I have been playing on the international scene for the past 17 years and as I am winding up my career, I thought it was best to go back home and play football in Zimbabwe.
‘‘Also, a good experience as I have never played in Zimbabwe before and I thought it is the best time to come back home and enjoy my last years of football playing at home.”
By joining Scottland, Musona will now team up with a number of players who are part of the senior national team and vying for a slot at the AFCON finals in Morocco later this year.
Musona bounced back into the Warriors fold after reversing his decision to retire from international football.
Among the Warriors teammates at Scottland are Khama Billiat, Terrence Dzvukamanja, Mthokozisi Msebe, Tymon Machope, Godknows Murwira and captain Walter Musona.
“It feels great. I have known them for some time, playing together and against each other so it’s a good feeling because it’s not like I am coming into a completely new team as most of them I have played with, and against them.”
He will play under the captaincy of his younger brother, Walter. The two played together in Warriors colours during the 2026 Fifa World Cup Group C qualifying tie against Benin, at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
“It feels great, I’ve always wanted to play with him and for the first time we did it at the national team and it felt good because I have always wanted to play with him. I have always wanted him to be a great player and play better than I did, to achieve big things in his career. I now have an opportunity to also push him and help him to do big things and grow his career.
“So, I am looking forward to it and I hope that it’s going to be a good experience for him and it gives me the opportunity to show him the other side of football that he might not have experienced and also not only him but the teammates, the youngsters in the team.”
In a message to the Scottland supporters, Musona said his aim is to speak less and do more on the field of play where it matters most.
“I am not a person who promises verbally, I prefer to speak through action on the field of play.
‘‘I am promising them my best and help this ambitious team achieve what it wants to achieve, and I am looking forward to this opportunity that Scottland has afforded me and I would like to thank the team and everyone who is involved.”
Although he sees his last football days in Scottland colours, Musona is not sure how many more years he will be active.
“As long as the legs can allow me, I will continue to play and give back to the country because it’s a great honour to be playing in Zimbabwe.”
But seriously, is this the direction our football is heading? How do we improve our football when we engage spent forces in our football? Where is the development? I think the PSL must put a rule to limit the number of players over 30 years old that are registered with each team. Otherwise our football is fast going south. The impact is seen already in the Warriors set up. There is more hype about foreigners who have Zimbabwe ties to play for the Warriors because there is no local talent being developed. How can a team register, Khama Billiat, Ronald Pfumbudzayi, Knowledge Musona, Peter Muduwa, Taimon Machope? These guys should be in coaching structures, not in field players. They displace young talent and ultimately kill it.
