SAPAO IMPRESSED BY PSL CLUBS INVESTMENT

Sports Reporter

MALAWIAN sports marketing guru Felix Sapao says the investment which is flowing into the Castle Lager Premiership clubs is impressive.

The league, powered by some ambitious newboys, has attracted a host of foreigners, including many Malawian players, and a number of Zambian players and coaches.

It has also attracted players from West Africa while some Zimbabweans, who have been playing in England, have switched bases and are now plying their careers back home.

‘‘The investment by clubs into Zimbabwean football looks good,’’ Sapao told H-Metro.

‘‘But now there is a need to have the revenue streams for the clubs looked at.

The coming in of Scottland FC has knee-jerked other clubs into investing more into their clubs.

The collapse of the Supersport deal was a big failure and that has to be looked at and maybe you start talking to Canal Plus.

‘‘The biggest problem with the way it was structured was greed. I tried to fight that but was pushed aside although I had initiated it.

‘‘Most of the money went into the pockets of the deal makers from both the PSL and SuperSport.”

He added: ‘‘The other thing is the PSL clubs didn’t look at the value of being broadcast across Africa to then look at advertising revenue.

‘‘The other problem is the stadium owners wanting to gain from advertising. This new PSL board has to do research on why clubs like Blackpool, Gunners, Monomotapa etc folded. Talk to the club owner to give an honest response. Then mechanisms have to be put in place so that it never happens again.

‘‘Otherwise soon others will become disillusioned and leave the game. Tanzanian football has gained because of Azam TV live broadcast. Kenyan football will also gain from Azam TV live broadcast.’’
