A NUMBER of social football leagues are mushrooming in Harare, as football lovers embrace ways of keeping themselves entertained and, in the process, staying fit.
H-Metro is now covering the Harare Saturday Soccer League (HSSL), which has lured former top-flight league players.
The HSSL has now been in existence for three years, although the majority of teams have been playing against each other, as far back as 10 years ago.
The league consists of both corporate and community-based teams.
HSSL have 16 teams, which play all their matches on Saturdays.
Black Panther won the first championship in 2019 before games were suspended by the outbreak of Covid-19.
This Saturday, the HSSL will be going into their Matchday 23, with Agents FC leading the table on 48 points.
Legal Lions anchor the log with 14 points from 21 games.
Quinton Chibisa, HSSL chairman, said their league is competitive and is the top-flight of social leagues.
“The teams here are separated by a point on the log. You can’t predict a match before it is played. Any team can win against any opponent.
“We really feel it’s the Premier League of social leagues. We don’t just take in new members, as we first verify their commitment and availability for games.
“We keep every aspect of our league interesting. Having some space in the media is a major boost for us, we never expected that,” Chibisa said.
