THE eighth edition of the Jadel Football Academy Invitational Tournament brought eight academies together in a spirited display of grassroots talent at Rufaro on Saturday.
Power Academy emerged victorious, defeating tournament hosts and favourites Jadel FA 2-0 in a closely-contested Mbare derby final.
While Power Academy and the runners-up walked away with cash prizes, medals and a trophy, the spirit of participation was the day’s biggest winner, with all competing teams receiving tokens of appreciation for their efforts.
Jadel FA co-founder and director, Walter “Ringers” Musanhu outlined the organisation’s systematic approach to nurturing talent, emphasising a patient, age-group-focused strategy.
“Over the past five years, we have maintained a consistent focus on player development,” said Musanhu.
“This year’s team is the Under-14s, last year it was the Under-13s, and the year before that, the Under-12s. This shows we are systematically building this team from the ground up.”
Musanhu revealed an ambitious long-term vision, dubbed the “2034 Project”, which aims to expand the club’s reach and scout talent from every corner of Zimbabwe. He stressed that the initiative is a community effort, not a closed shop.
“The JFA is not run by just one coach, it belongs to the people and is an inclusive body for everyone,” he said.
“When selecting a national team, we draw players from various clubs. We are giving chances to players from all over Zimbabwe. “Take the team from Victoria Falls, for example, they cannot be expected to compete here without that support. We have a high mountain to climb, but we are committed to the journey.” The tournament also carried a strong social message, aligning with national efforts to combat drug and substance abuse.
“We are also fighting against drug abuse,” Musanhu said.
“We are taking this initiative forward together; by joining forces, we can build something meaningful. We are fully in sync with the Government’s vision.”The importance of the event was underscored by the presence of ZIFA executive board member Brighton Ushendibaba, who also contributed in his personal capacity as CEO of PANJAP Motors.
Ushendibaba praised Jadel FA for leading the charge in grassroots development, stressing that such tournaments are the foundation of the sport’s future.
“As one of the organisations leading grassroots development in the country, hosting tournaments like this is crucial,” Ushendibaba said.
