AN INMATE at Mutare Remand Prison has escaped and disappeared into the mountains while doing general maintenance work at the Mutare Show Grounds together with eight other convicts.
Although details of the escapee were not readily available, some of the convicts revealed that the inmate disappeared after lying to two armed prison officers guarding them that he wanted to go to the toilet to relieve himself.
They said he subsequently scaled the security fence and bolted into Murahwa Hills.
Search parties have since been dispatched to track down the fugitive.
