It’s the end of the month and revellers will be hungry for entertainment, hence the array of fun-filled activities lined up in the capital.
Yet, the joy seekers need to be alert to the winter season and would need to make sure they keep warm to avoid flu bugs. The Herald Arts conducted a survey on some of the major events taking place across the country and below is our weekend guide:
Baba Sharo’s mother
of all family shows
Sungura musician Alick Macheso’s much-hyped “Winter Warmer Concert” takes place on Sunday at the Harare Gardens.
Macheso will be the headline act at the gig which is set to bring families together at one of his favourite hunting grounds, courtesy of Werras Entertainment. He will share the stage with gospel musicians Mathias Mhere and Dorcas Moyo.
Zimdancehall acts such as Silent Killer have also been drafted to cater for the young at heart.
Event organisers told The Herald Arts that everything was in place for the gig as they seek to create a memorable atmosphere.
They said the gig will start in time to ensure everyone has an opportunity to watch all the acts. Harare Gardens is an outdoor venue which is known for hosting huge events and with the hype the gig is having it is clear the show will have a huge attendance.

@40 Dinner Celebrations
As the adage says, “life begins at 40”, so is the case of award-winning gospel musician Minister Michael Mahendere, who is set to celebrate his 40th birthday by hosting a special dinner celebration tomorrow at Golden Conifer in Strathaven, Harare.
Dubbed, “Minister Michael Mahendere@40 Dinner Celebrations”, the celebrations are expected to be characterised by glitz and glamour. It will also see the musician unleashing new life-transforming projects that are in their preliminary stages, meant to mark a new chapter in his musical career. Mahendere told The Herald Arts that he was raring to go.
“We are very excited that the day has finally come to celebrate my life and career. Everything is now in place and this is an event not to miss because it is packed with exciting things,” he said.
“We still have limited tickets available that are on promotion for individuals and corporates that would still want to be part of this event.”
Mahendere said the celebrations will be mainly focused on the dinner and the live DVD recording for “Classical Worship Volume 3” that will be carrying 10 songs. Another major programme that will be taking place during the dinner is fundraising where the proceeds will be channelled towards three main projects.
These are the establishment of a Christian radio station, state-of-the-art recording studio, rehearsal room, and acquisition of staging and lighting equipment.
“The raising of funds will not just end here, but, in fact, this is just the beginning of a year-long campaign to acquire and set up everything aforementioned. With the support from fans and corporates I know that we will be able to sail through,” Mahendere said.
Reflecting on his life for the past four decades, the “Makanaka Jesu” hit-maker said he had learned a lot of things that have made him become better in life.
While encouraging upcoming musicians who would want to excel in their careers, he emphasised that being grounded was the key.
“In my experience, the most helpful notes are many but we can single out being grounded, making sure that you have enough understanding of the task that is leading people in music. Fame is not the goal rather changing and edifying the lives through music is the goal,” said Mahendere.
Mahendere, whose career is blooming, appreciated significant individuals who have contributed immensely to where he is today.
“I am where I am today because of my parents, Gogo Mahendere and the late Sekuru Mahendere, who were the first school I ever learned from, and my brothers who taught me everything as I grew up,” he said.
“My wife Vimbai has been my support system all the way, as well as my mentors and spiritual parents Prophet Emmanuel and Ruth Makandiwa who have also moulded me into becoming what you see today.” Mahendere was this week busy personally delivering tickets to the event to various corporates in the city.
Diamond Musica headlines DRC 63rd Independence celebrations
Rhumba exponent, Pitshou Lumiere, will tonight perform at the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) 63rd Uhuru celebrations taking place at Rainbow Towers. He will be backed by Diamond Musica.
Diamond Musica will further back three other rhumba players including lead guitarist Shaka Zulu, Kaninda Dhodi from Lubumbashi Stars, Ruffa Salutanie (Real Sounds of Africa), and club wheel-spinner, DJ Ben.
Dendera musician Suluman Chimbetu is the only local artiste performing at the event and he posted with excitement about the event.
Jah Prayzah, Baba Harare and Apama at Mutangadura
Contemporary musician Jah Prayzah will be in action tomorrow when he entertains fans at Mutangadura, affectionately known as Mutangaz HideOut, along Mutare Road. He will be supported by Baba Harare and Apama Styles.
Jah Prayzah, who is riding high with his 12th and 13th studio albums – “Chiremerera” and “Maita Baba”, will sample the new music to his fans, while Baba Harare, known for his jiti sound and energetic dances, is expected to serenade his fans. Much-revered dancer-cum-comedian Apama Style will also have his share as he will display his dancing skills.
Fans will have to pay US$10 for a general advance ticket and US$40 for the VIP, with the tickets available at all Mutangadura outlets and butcheries.
