ONCE formidable dance ensemble, Jika maJika, which rocked entertainment hot spots in Mutare and beyond a few years ago, but later sunk into oblivion has regrouped and is set to rekindle lost glory. Scores of revellers would jostle in awe to watch the waist wriggling antics of the lads and laces and leave them drooling particularly at Pavillion where pleasure seekers whined and dined.
The group, formed in 2011 also rocked other places like Curvelake Bar (Mwamuka) in Sakubva, Club Mandisa, Nyanyadzi Sports Club (PaKenzo), Tops Bottle Store in Dangamvura and Dzonzayi in Chipinge. They were a household name among revellers, among them diamond miners and dealers otherwise known as magweja in vernacular.
Every promoter would want to be part of the group’s success story.
Popular among the group members were the sexy-looking Getty, voluptuous Asmin and charming Beaulah.
But as the biblical Hosea would put it, the dance group pioneers vanished like morning mist and disappeared like dew in the sunlight, a development that left the dance group industry in the eastern border city in limbo.
The Weekender, however, caught up with one of the founding members and group leader of the new-look six-member Jika maJika, Blessing Murawu.
He said they were looking forward to rock the city like yester-years and prove that they were down, but not out.
“We are stronger than ever and we are ready to go. Our group never crumbled, but they were challenges that were affecting us. The group now has new young and talented members. We are an ambitious and disciplined team. We have been rehearsing on a daily basis and we are ready for any challenges. Members that constitute the group are Elisha Kirimira, Tawanda Mamvana, Florence, Rudo and Beaulah,” he said.
He urged promoters to play a critical role in supporting local artistes and artists.
“We are nothing without promoters.
“We need them. They should support us. If they don’t, then Mutare will always lag behind in terms of competition and exposure.”
