adminAFTER having been postponed the previous month, the Joshua Nkomo Golf Classic and the Legacy Dinner is now tentatively set for Thursday at Chapman Golf Club in Harare amid reports that preparations for the memorial event were at an advanced stage.
Jabulani Hadebe, the spokesman for the organisers of the tournament, who is also the chief executive officer of the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo National Foundation, confirmed the new dates re-emphasising that the venue remains unchanged.
“The golf tournament will be held on 20 August, and the venue is still Chapman Golf Club in Harare,” said Hadebe, adding that the foundation has been assisting in paying school fees for the underprivileged children, and that some of the proceeds from the forthcoming tourney would be directed towards the same cause.
Different ministries are expected to participate in the tournament which is aimed at perpetuating and preserving the legacy of the late Vice-President Dr Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo. Proceedings of the tournament will be channeled to the Joshua Nkomo Museum, upkeep of the trust and also to various charities administered by the foundation.
Ephraim Mashingaidze, who is part of the organising team, said the registration for the tournament was still open, adding that the competition would also be useful in the development of the sport.
“Registration is still open with the fee at $160 per team. There are still many slots available and we can still accommodate more teams. We appeal to the corporate world to chip in as this tournament will also be used in the development of golf countrywide,” said Mashingaidze.
In a bid to secure more funds for its various projects, the foundation launched a number of programmes namely, the Chess Challenge, Golf Classic and a Charity Soccer Cup, which is yet to get the blessing of the Zimbabwe Football Association.
The late Vice-President, affectionately known as Father Zimbabwe, passed on on 1 July 1999.
