A speeding joy ride by three drunk friends ended tragically in the wee hours of Sunday morning after they were involved in a road accident, leading to the death of two of them.
The driver, Never Mashinga, is still battling for his life at Rusape General Hospital.
Manicaland police spokesperson, Inspector Inspector Nobert Muzondo confirmed the accident saying one person died on the spot while the other died at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals in Harare.
“On 28 May 2023, Never Mashinga was driving a Honda Fit along the Rusape-Wedza Highway with Sniejder Tsingana and Simbarashe Nyarota on board. He was speeding,” said Inspector Muzondo.
“As he approached the 1 km peg, he turned left in full speed and failed to control the vehicle. It overturned several times and landed on its roof. Passengers were thrown out of the vehicle and Tsingana died on the spot while Mashinga and Nyarota sustained serious injuries,” he said.
“Nyarota died on Tuesday afternoon at Parirenyatwa Hospital while Mashinga is still admitted at Rusape General Hospital,” said Inspector Muzondo.
Meanwhile, Inspector Muzondo said the police have launched a manhunt for a driver who fatally hit a Form One pupil in Rusape last week and did not stop.
“On Monday last week, Takudzwa Maukazuwa of Ridgemont Park was walking along the Mutare–Harare Highway when an unknown driver who was driving a Toyota Runx hit him. Takudzwa fell on the tarmac and sustained head injuries. He was rushed to Rusape General hospital where he died on admission,” said Inspector Muzondo.
“The vehicle Registration number is AEQ 911 and was later found dumped along the Old Tsanzaguru Road on Taylor Farm. The vehicle is being held by the police and investigations are underway.
“The police urge all drivers to observe road rules. Drivers must be cautious all the time and report all road accidents, said Inspector Muzondo.
