Justice Makomo a legal champion

THE late High Court judge, Justice Elijah Makomo, has been described as a sharp legal mind, whose intellectual prowess would be greatly missed.

Justice Makomo died at the Avenues Clinic on Christmas Day.

He was 44.

In a statement, the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) described Justice Makomo as a legal champion.

“The Judicial Service Commissioners; the Judge President of the High Court; judges and magistrates; the Secretary of the Judicial Service Commission; and all members of the Judicial Service would like to express deepest condolences to the Makomo family on the passing on of the Honourable Justice Elijah Makomo at the Avenues Clinic in Harare on 25 December.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Mrs Ansicaria Makomo and children.  May the Lord comfort them during this difficult time,” said the JSC.

Justice Makomo, who also served in the police force, joined the Ministry of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs as a magistrate in 2005.

He was appointed Registrar of the High Court from 2012 to 2013 before being promoted to Deputy Chief Magistrate in 2018.

In 2019, Justice Makomo became Chief Registrar of the Superior Courts, which include the High Court, Constitutional Court, Labour Court and the Supreme Court.

In 2020, he was appointed the JSC Head of Policy and Legal Services before being appointed a High Court judge last year.

Justice Makomo studied Law at the University of South Africa.

He also held a Master of Law in Corporate Law and Master of Business Administration.

Mourners are gathered at No 323 Biston Road, New Grange, Harare.
