KAIA’S ROAR! Forgotten opener smashes first Test ton as Chevrons crush Bangladesh

INNOCENT Kaia silenced his doubters in spectacular fashion, smashing a magnificent maiden Test century to inspire Zimbabwe to a historic innings-and-85-run demolition of Bangladesh at Harare Sports Club on Tuesday.

For Kaia, it was more than just 140 priceless runs. It was sweet revenge after three frustrating years in the international wilderness.

The Highfield-born opener had shown promise when he scored 67 against the West Indies at Queens Sports Club in

Bulawayo in 2023 on debut, only to disappear from the Test scene. Last year, while Zimbabwe played no fewer than 10 Test matches, Kaia watched from the sidelines.

Instead of complaining, he let his bat do the talking.

Week after week in domestic cricket, Kaia piled on the runs until selectors simply could not ignore him any longer.

And when his chance finally came on a lively Harare wicket offering plenty of seam and bounce, the right-hander grabbed it with both hands.

His flawless 140 anchored Zimbabwe’s first innings of 410, a knock that not only rescued his international career but also powered the Chevrons to their biggest-ever Test victory by innings margin, surpassing last year’s innings-and-73-run triumph over Afghanistan.

The triumph carried even greater significance because Zimbabwe achieved it without inspirational all-rounder Sikandar Raza, proving the Chevrons possess far greater depth than many believed.

Kaia’s emphatic return has also handed national selectors a welcome selection headache, with genuine competition for places strengthening the squad ahead of future assignments.

Kaia’s story has become the perfect example of merit-based selection paying off.

He earned his recall after finishing as the Logan Cup’s leading run scorer before capping a remarkable domestic season with a century in the Pro50 Championship final to help Southern Rocks complete a domestic double.

His purple patch has been nothing short of incredible.
Before the Bangladesh Test, Kaia had already hammered six centuries in his previous 10 first-class and List A innings. His century against the Tigers made it an astonishing seven hundreds in just 11 innings.

His composed innings showcased a batsman at the peak of his powers, with confident footwork, crisp cover drives and complete control despite difficult batting conditions.

While Kaia stole the headlines, Zimbabwe’s fast bowlers laid the foundation for history.

After electing to field first, the Chevrons bundled Bangladesh out for just 140, with 20-year-old pace sensation

Newman Nyamhuri claiming a career-best four wickets. Blessing Muzarabani, Richard Ngarava and Brad Evans chipped in with two wickets each.

Brian Bennett (59), Craig Ervine (60) and Wessly Madhevere (77 not out) provided valuable support as Zimbabwe built a commanding 410.

Bangladesh spinner Taijul Islam fought hard with seven wickets, but his efforts were not enough to stop the hosts.

The visitors folded for 185 in their second innings as Muzarabani grabbed four wickets, Ngarava three, Nyamhuri two and Evans one, with all 20 Bangladesh wickets falling to Zimbabwe’s pace attack.

The victory was also memorable for stand-in captain Richard Ngarava, who celebrated a dream leadership debut.

“The hard work that the boys have put in has got us to where we are now. As I walked into this Test match, there was one thing I was thinking about, making history,” said Ngarava.

He said victories over Afghanistan and Bangladesh had shown Zimbabwe how to make home conditions count.

“We’ve got the advantage of the home soil. We know the conditions better, and we just needed to bowl as many good balls as we could.”

With history made and fresh heroes emerging, Zimbabwe’s selectors now have encouraging options at their disposal as the Chevrons turn their attention to three One Day Internationals against Bangladesh on July 6, 9 and 11 at Harare

Sports Club before the series moves to Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo for three T20 internationals on July 15, 17 and 19.
