FOR those who have a musical kick in their soul and even the ‘bathroom’ singers, not so blessed with the musical notes, the Karaoke Nights at Wise Owl Hotel in Mutare every Friday and Saturday have become a hit.
As the famous playwright, William Shakespeare, wrote in one of his books: “If music be the food of love, play on,” so it has become for many revellers in Mutare that enjoy soulful tunes and singing at the Karaoke Nights.
Hosted by Mutare-based solo guitarist, Steve Chikotie, since inception early last month, the Friday and Saturday Karaoke Nights are proving to be a crowd puller.
Karaoke nights are a form of interactive entertainment where amateurs sing along with recorded music using a microphone. The music is typically an instrumental version of a well-known popular song.
Chikotie’s artistic ability on the acoustic guitar to strum any song particularly the golden oldies really gives a kick to the evenings.
However, what is most interesting at the Karaoke Nights is the good cheer, even when some ‘bathroom’ singers hit some remotely off discords that are deafening.
Anyone is free to try out on the microphone or to make special requests from Chikotie. Wise Owl Hotel spokesperson, Josh Makaya, said the high turnout at the Karaoke Nights have proved that revellers in Mutare were being deprived of variety in terms of entertainment.
“Ever since we started the Karaoke Nights with Steve Chikotie there has been a good following. This proves that people want Karaoke and we will give them that and more here,” said Makaya popularly known as Bla Josh.
Chikotie’s musical prowess can, however, not be left out in keeping the joyous mood throughout the evenings as he strums popular golden oldies and some of his songs.
The Mutare-born and bred solo guitarist who now has five albums to his name has over the years blossomed and is now well-regarded among the country’s best solo guitarists like Rusape-based Steve ‘Dhongi’ Makoni and Marabi music crooner, Kireni Zulu.
