Kariba tiger fishing contest hots up

Yesterday, Michelle Howell of Charter A caught a tiger weighing 10,37kg,  but before the ululation died down, another angler Gideon Benade of Africom, caught an 11,40 kg monster of a tiger. The 51st edition of world’s biggest single species game fishing tournament, the Kariba Invitational Tiger Fishing Tournament, entered its first day on Wednesday with more than 600 world acclaimed anglers competing to catch the biggest fish.
The winner in the three day tournament gets away with a Nissan NP 200 vehicle while other winners will get away with prizes like boats, generators and trophies, among other things.
Fishermen this time around found Kariba defiantly stubborn with temperatures soaring around 45 degrees Celcius. Although Benade could eventually win the grand prize, women anglers have so far dominated the tournament.
The first day belonged to female anglers as statistics show that the biggest catch of the day was an 8,105 kg tiger fish caught by Darren Crause of Team Deluxe.
She was followed closely by another female angler Brenda Makchissin of Ram Petroleum, who caught a 7, 06 kg tiger. On Thursday another woman, Jennie Christe of Charter A, caught a 7,65kg tiger.
The youngest competitor, nine-year-old Samuel Willa of Team Mercury, shocked many after hooking up a                  3,88kg tiger, which he staggered to carry. The biggest tiger caught on Lake Kariba since 1962 was a 15,7 kg monster hooked by Jenny Daynes.
