Sikhumbuzo Moyo in Binga
VICE President Kembo Mohadi has officially commissioned the Kasambabezi Border Post, which links Zimbabwe and Zambia through Binga District, marking a significant milestone in efforts to enhance cross-border trade, security and regional integration.
The commissioning ceremony was held amid pomp and fanfare, with the Vice President unveiling the commemorative plaque in the presence of Matabeleland North Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Richard Moyo, Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Kazembe Kazembe, senior officials from the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra), the Department of Immigration and other Government departments.
The new border post is expected to facilitate the smooth movement of people and goods while curbing the rampant smuggling and illegal crossings that had characterised the area for years.
Following the commissioning ceremony, VP Mohadi toured the former illegal docking point on the banks of the Zambezi River that was previously used by smugglers and other travellers crossing between Zimbabwe and Zambia outside official channels.
Officials briefed the Vice President on how the site had become a hub for undocumented cross-border movements and illicit trade, exposing people to significant risks as they relied on makeshift boats to navigate the crocodile-infested Zambezi River.
The operationalisation of the Kasambabezi Border Post is expected to bring such activities to an end by providing a safe, secure and regulated crossing point, while boosting legitimate trade, improving revenue collection and strengthening bilateral relations between Zimbabwe and Zambia
