Now, as Afcon 2025 approaches, the question lingers, is there one more chapter left for Knowledge Musona and Khama Billiat in the Warriors story?
Former captain Willard Katsande believes so, arguing that their wealth of experience could guide Zimbabwe through a tough group featuring Egypt, South Africa and Angola.
The two icons have long carried the nation’s hopes, from dazzling qualifiers to unforgettable goals, but with both now seemingly past their prime and playing locally for Scottland, the debate is split between those calling for renewal and those insisting their experience is still needed.
The 2025 Afcon finals, the 35th edition of Africa’s premier football competition, will run from 21 December 2025 to 18 January 2026 in Morocco.
Twenty-four teams will battle for continental glory across nine venues, including the grand Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, where the final will be held.
The Warriors open their campaign against Egypt in Agadir on 22 December before a highly anticipated southern African derby clash against South Africa in Marrakech on 29 December.
With such stiff competition, experience could prove to be Zimbabwe’s most valuable weapon and that is where the Musona-Billiat conversation becomes critical.
Katsande, who led Zimbabwe at the 2017 Afcon, believes it would be a mistake to ignore the two veterans.
“They still have a role to play in the next Afcon. Great experience, which needs protection and support from our people,” said Katsande.
His endorsement has reignited calls for the Warriors’ technical team, which is still awaiting a new head coach following Michael Nees’ dismissal to include Musona and Billiat in the Afcon plans.
For some, it’s time for the new generation to rise.
For others, experience is non-negotiable.
While some may see them as veterans past their prime, Musona and Billiat are proving their enduring value at Scottland FC, who are on the verge of making history in their debut Premier Soccer League season.
Scottland currently sits six points clear at the top of the table with just three games to play.
