Khama faces competition for ‘highest-paid player’ tag

JOHANNESBURG. – Mamelodi Sundowns must reward Namibian forward Peter Shalulile by elevating him to the status of being the highest-paid player in the South African Premiership.

If that happens, he will replace Zimbabwe international forward, Khama Billiat, as the highest-paid player in Supa Diski.

Shalulile has defied his critics by delivering 51 goals plus 16 assists in his first two seasons at Sundowns.

He has missed only 10 out of the 94 games that The Brazilians have played since he joined Highlands Park with his absenteeism due to being rested.

“If performance is to be rewarded then Peter should now justifiably be the highest-paid player in the league,” says a former Namibian international, who chose not to be named.

“Peter obviously has a contract with Sundowns but I think this is the time for the club to make an improved offer as a reward for what the player has done for the club.

“In joining Sundowns from Highlands Park his package was obviously improved but the reality is that he was earning little at Highlands Park and Sundowns were taking chances at the time.

“Now that the chance that they took on Peter has worked why not reward him accordingly with a market-related package.

“Peter is no longer just another Namibian in the PSL but a man whose goals have brought Sundowns all this success that they continue to enjoy so he should be brought to around the same levels as the top earners in the league such as Khama Billiat and Keagan Dolly.

“Based on the performance he should be taking more than Billiat and Dolly who are both on packages in the region of R10 million per annum.

“So, is Peter not deserving to be the best-paid player in the league?”

He added:

“Sundowns must now make him the highest-paid player in the league.

“In being spoken about as the best performer not only in South Africa and amongst the top three on the continent who are all on about US$1 million (R15,45 million) it will also make sense that what his package is also in the same ranks.

“Unfortunately, I doubt he is even in the top 30 earners on the continent because he is not even in the top bracket of earners in South Africa.

“So, I honestly hope Sundowns make consideration for this because Peter is an asset for them. He has scored goals that have won the club trophies and worked hard enough to deserve a top package. He must be the highest-paid player in the league.” – KickOff.com
