KHAMI United are popping bottles after securing a well-earned promotion into the Zifa Southern Region Division One League, thanks to a tight 1-0 win over Cowdray Park at the weekend.
With two games left before the curtain comes down, Khami United have stretched their lead to 65 points, placing themselves a neat seven points ahead of second placed Njube Spurs. Spurs are still in the heat with East Rovers for the first runner up spot, setting up a tense finish to the season.
Zifa Bulawayo Province executive chairman Francis Ntuta applauded the league leaders for their solid campaign.
“We say congratulations to Khami Rovers, they did a very good job. We still await to see who will be our first and second runners up. The relegation battle is still on and with the two games to go, teams that are going to be relegated are yet to be confirmed,” said Ntuta.
East Rovers are on 53 points, clinging only one point ahead of Chicken Inn who remain hungry in fourth place.
Meanwhile, the struggle at the bottom is ugly.
College sides Hillside Teachers College and Herentals College are staring at the dreaded drop. Hillside picked up a 2-2 draw against MPOSA, inching to 17 points, while Herentals are cemented at the basement on six points and sinking fast.
In the Zifa Matabeleland North Division Two, the promotion race has its own fireworks. Mosi Rovers look determined to return to the big boys’ playground. They lead the standings on 55 points after 22 rounds, two points ahead of Golden Lions who beat Banyayi 2-0.
Mosi showed no mercy, hammering Twelve Stars 4-0, while Classic Luyando turned Victoria Falls Academy into training cones with a 7-2 demolition job.
Victoria Falls Academy and Monde Academy are stuck in the drop zone. Monde did not kick a ball as their match against Sao Paulo was postponed. Sao Paulo sit sixth with 30 points, as Nakaluba Warriors played out a 1-1 draw against LXG Lite.
The promotion dream is alive for some. For others, the trapdoor is yawning wide.
