Chitungwiza Central Hospital plans to open a kidney transplant unit before year end and become the first health institution in the country to offer such surgery.
The hospital’s chief executive officer Dr Obadiah Moyo on Monday said President Mugabe was funding the unit.
“All the equipment is now available. We are now in the final stages of the scheme.
“We have already identified the surgeons for training and some of them are currently under training and they will be aided by a special team of doctors from India,” said Dr Moyo.
He said the opening of the surgery would reduce the cost of kidney operations.
“The surgery is going to reduce the trouble of cost since the transplant will now be done locally at a cheaper cost than going to Cape Town or India. The surgery aims to benefit the socially disadvantaged people in Zimbabwe,” said Dr Moyo.
Chitungwiza Central Hospital has been offering kidney renal dialysis programme free of charge, while other hospitals were charging between $250 to $370 for a single dialysis session.
