ZIFA Eastern Region Division One pacesetters Mutare City Rovers this week on Wednesday received yet another major boost after receiving a generous donation of a complete soccer kit from a Sakubva-born former soccer player.
Jimmy “Hwetu” Musembwa, a former CPMZ and Fierce Rovers midfielder, now a South African based businessman — donated the kit at Sports Oval ground during the team’s training session.
The kit includes 18 jerseys and shorts, socks, training bibs, kit bag and four soccer balls. Speaking during the handover ceremony Musembwa said: “I am a former soccer player and I played soccer in Sakubva and I was very impressed with the way Mutare City Rovers is playing.
“I am happy that the team is currently on the top of the log so this is what prompted me to make this donation so that the team gets morale and boost the chances of promotion.”
He added: “It is a way of ploughing back to the community and it is only us the people from Mutare who can support our team. “This is only the beginning of better things to come.
“I would like to wish the team all the best in their quest to be promoted into premier league.”
The team’s chairman Samuel “Goly” Tauya said: “As a team we are very overwhelmed by this donation.
“It brings in the point that this is a community-based initiative and we are calling all stakeholders and businesses alike to come forward and support the team. This is a team for all of us.”
The team spokesperson Clayton Masekesa said the donation came at a time when the team was at its best.
Said Masekesa: “This is a good football gesture. We want to thank Musembwa for remembering us.
“We feel greatly honoured to realise that there are some people beyond the border who are behind us. As a team we want to express our great appreciation to their commitment.”
Masekesa added that the people of Mutare should take a leaf from this donation and have collective desire to see the team moving forward.
“It is our calls to the people of Mutare and beyond to put our heads together and make collective efforts to fulfil our dreams of getting promoted,” he said, adding that the team was encouraging community participation.
Mutare City Rovers have received complete football kits from ZimMidas, Golly Bakery and Wharfdale Printers.
Besides the kit, some various companies and individuals and the executive have been chipping in with various forms of donations.
Meanwhile, Rovers will be crossing the swords of supremacy with an equally stubborn Ruwa in another potentially explosive league encounter on Sunday at Sakubva stadium.
The match kicks off at 3pm.
