TWO men from Fort Rixon in Matabeleland South Province have appeared in court facing allegations of killing a kudu.
Khulekani Nguni and Thamsanqa Nkomo appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Ernest Muzembe on charges of contravening Section 59 (2) (a) of the Parks and Wildlife Act Chapter 20:14, which pertains to hunting any animal on any land.
The duo pleaded not guilty, and the matter was remanded to February 3, for judgment. In their defence, the two men told the court that on the day in question, they were returning from work when they saw dogs chasing a kudu.
They followed the dogs and found that the kudu had been killed. They then decided to cut the kudu’s neck with an axe to drain the blood.
The court heard that on December 18, 2024, at around 11am, the two men hunted and killed a male kudu using five dogs.
Some villagers spotted them and informed two farmworkers, who then found the two men cutting off the kudu’s head.
The matter was reported to the police, leading to the men’s arrest and the recovery of the kudu carcass. The value of the kudu was US$3 000.
