RISING Chimurenga musician, Kurai Makore, believes that traditional folk songs will last forever despite a lack of authentic composers.
The 37-year-old artist is riding on a wave following the popularity of his song “Manhanga Matete,” which features a compelling jiti flair.
This track was popularised by Murewa jiti ensembles.
Coming from a strong Korokore cultural background, Makore has penned his own version of “Manhanga Matete” infused with a Chimurenga touch.
His rendition will be featured on his upcoming album, “Dzimwe Nguva,” set to be launched on August 8 at Sherwood Golf Club in Mabelreign, Harare.
In an interview with Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub, Makore expressed his deep appreciation for folk songs.
“I included ‘Manhanga Matete’ on this album to showcase my admiration for traditional folk music,” he said.
“These are the songs we grew up listening to, even without authentic composers. I created my own version in Chimurenga, inspired by the jiti version that has resonated with audiences everywhere.”
Makore also praised the Murewa jiti ensembles for their talent.
“It’s encouraging when people appreciate their traditions through song, as is the case with traditional folk music.
“I salute those behind these special songs, and it’s heartening to see that we are embracing tradition artistically.”
As the frontman of The Black Lions, Makore has been drawing large crowds at live shows. He said he was living his dream, having been embraced by many.
“I’m humbled by the support I have received over the years, which shows that I still have people backing me,” he said.
“I will always cherish the love I’m getting from them and we plan to return the favour with our upcoming album.
“The launch is set and we are looking forward to it, nothing will stop us as we have covered significant ground.”
In addition to ‘‘Manhanga Matete,’’ his forthcoming album features ten tracks, including ‘‘Sango,’’ ‘‘Dande,’’ ‘‘Hukama,’’ ‘‘Murume Wangu,’’ ‘‘Nyuchi,’’ and four bonus tracks: ‘‘Gotokoto Juvinari,’’ ‘‘Tombie,’’ ‘‘Zvinonetsa,’’ and ‘‘Rombe.’’ Most of the songs were composed by Makore, except for ‘‘Zvinonetsa,’’ which was written and composed by his uncle, Dr Thomas “Mukanya” Mapfumo.
Recorded at KOM Studios and co-produced by Oscar Chamba and Knowledge Nkoma, the album is expected to propel him to greater heights, judging by the positive feedback during his live performances.
Makore first made his mark in the music industry with his debut album ‘‘Gara Unzwe’’ in 2020, but it was his second album, ‘‘Ngooma Kurira,’’ released in 2022, that heralded a new era for him, leading to performances at major local festivals.
After receiving his uncle’s blessing to perform Black Unlimited songs, he has successfully blended them into his own playlist, making his act enjoyable.
What heightens the anticipation for Makore’s third album is its release coinciding with his upcoming performance in the United Kingdom alongside his uncle on August 23 in Birmingham.
This concert is touted as Mukanya’s farewell show before his retirement and will mark a significant moment as the iconic, US-based musician passes the baton to Makore during his last UK tour.
UK show promoter Joab Mugugu of Phab Entertainment Promotions highlighted the palpable excitement surrounding Mukanya’s farewell show featuring Makore.
“We are honoured by the trust bestowed upon us by the legendary Mukanya and do not take it for granted. Anyone who knows him understands that he is a perfectionist, especially regarding sound quality.
“His rehearsals resemble a real show, so providing him with perfect sound is crucial,” he said.
