THERE is a new baby in the domestic women’s Premiership and they want to shake the top-flight league.
Kwekwe Queens want to make a huge statement when they compete in the Premiership for the first time this season.
They have a club house, where all their players stay in Kwekwe, something which some established clubs in the Castle Lager Premiership, don’t have. They even have a full-time media officer.Their recruitment drive has seen the club sending scouts to rural areas to look for some of the best promising teenagers who want to play competitive football.
This has seen them recruiting a number of players, who have potential, and are being panel beaten to withstand the challenges that come with playing top-flight league football.
For the past few weeks, these players have been working under the guidance of coach Gift Hanyana.
They have been playing some friendly matches around the country.
At the weekend, Kwekwe Queens wrapped up their pre-season friendly matches with a dominant 4-0 win over MWOS Queens.
This meant that they have won all their three pre-season friendly matches.
They thrashed Mutare City 6-2, beat Faith Drive Academy2-0 and then hammered Mwos Queens 4-0.
On Sunday, they even trained in the backyard of the house of the club’s sponsor in Harare.
After that, the players were taken on a bonding exercise.
“This is a project primarily to give the girl child, especially the teenagers, a chance to use sport to help themselves and have a better life,” said a club official.
“There are players from deep down in Gokwe and from Binga and we took them all and gave them a place to stay in Kwekwe and a chance to pursue their dreams of becoming professional footballers.
“We will try to help them as much as we can and we are dedicated to make sure that Kwekwe Queens will be a major force in the game in this country.”
