Nduduzo Tshuma in WINDHOEK, Namibia
THE body of the late Namibian President and founding father, Dr Sam Nujoma, arrived in Windhoek on Thursday afternoon for the final leg of the Regional Processions ahead of the liberation icon’s burial on Saturday.
Dr Nujoma, who passed away at the age of 95 in a Windhoek hospital on 8 February 2025, has been celebrated for his rich legacy both at home and across the region.
A memorial service for him will take place at the Independence Stadium on Friday, where President Mnangagwa will be among the key speakers.

This will be followed by the burial the next day at Namibia’s National Heroes’ Acre in the capital.
Namibian President, Dr Nangolo Mbumba, received Dr Nujoma’s body at the Hosea Kutako International Airport to commence the Khomas Regional Route Procession. Khomas, Namibia’s largest region, which encompasses the capital Windhoek, is the eighth and final region to hold the regional procession after the government declared a period of national mourning following Dr Nujoma’s death.
Meanwhile, local media reports have said that the ruling party, Swapo, will also officially unveil Dr Nujoma’s statue holding a baby at the party headquarters on Thursday.
Party spokesperson Hilma Nicanor confirmed that the party will hold a memorial service at the headquarters as well.

“We will be having the unveiling of the founding president’s statue at the Swapo headquarters at 11:00, followed by a memorial service at 14:00,” he said.
“We are, however, preparing an official statement that will outline the details,” she told The Namibian.
The baby in Nujoma’s hands, according to the publication, is a survivor of the Cassinga massacre.
