Government has equipped all local authorities, both urban and rural with fire tenders marking a major milestone in the country’s disaster management efforts.
Speaking at the Minister meet media talk in Harare, Minister of Local Government and Public Works Daniel Garwe described the initiative as groundbreaking saying it was the first time since 1890 that rural local authorities have been given their own firefighting resources.
“For the first time, even rural local authorities are now capacitated with fire tenders,” Minister Garwe said.
“This ensures that no community, whether in urban or rural areas, has to wait for fire trucks to travel long distances. Every local authority is now fully equipped to deal with fire emergencies.”
In addition to fire equipment Minister Garwe said there were efforts to boost rural infrastructure development.
“We are ensuring that rural communities have access to the same services and opportunities as their urban counterparts,” he said.
Government is also working to attract investment into rural areas, encouraging councils to present prepared documentation to potential investors.
Minister Garwe said while mining activities were concentrated in rural provinces, there was significant untapped potential in areas like Murewa, Mutoko, and Goromonzi, which are known for producing agricultural products such as vegetables and mangoes.
“We are urging local councils to invite investors from around the world. These rural provinces hold invaluable natural resources, and it is crucial that we tap into these resources to foster economic growth.”
Minister Garwe said Government was also promoting the development of “smart houses” in rural areas.
The homes will be powered by solar energy, feature flush systems and provide access to clean water, ensuring that rural communities benefit from the same amenities enjoyed by urban residents.
