BULAWAYO giants Matabeleland Tuskers are the 2014-15 Logan Cup winners after sealing their position at the top of the table with a six-wicket win over Mountaineers in Bulawayo last Friday.The defending champions failed to rise to the occasion and bowed down to Tuskers. They finished as the tail-enders.
Tuskers finished the season with 38-points from eight matches, ten points clear of second-placed, Mid-West Rhinos, while Mashonaland Eagles were on third place.
Tuskers had won the Logan Cup thrice before and this will be their fourth triumph.
Tuskers coach, Wayne James, will be hoping to write his own history and win a first ever double-Cup for his club after being promoted as the head coach in 2013.
This becomes his first trophy as head coach after having the privilege of winning the 2012-13 Logan Cup as an assistant coach under former Zimbabwe captain, Heath Streak.
“This is quite an achievement for us as a club and obviously I am delighted. We are very close to clinching a double, but I am sure whichever team that we will be up against will not give us that privilege on a silver platter.
“We cannot afford to lose the final match,” said James.
Meanwhile, Mountaineers will take on Rhinos in Kwekwe next Tuesday in the last Pro50 season match that will determine the finalists.
The Pro50 Championship final is slated for next Saturday.
Tuskers have already secured their spot in the final as log leaders even in the event they lose to Eagles in Bulawayo next Tuesday. The defending champions will have to win their last season match against Eagles and garner bonus points in the event Eagles wins against Tuskers.
They will also, however, have to earnestly hope Eagles lose to Tuskers.
Mountaineers coach, Shepherd Makunura, said the best team won the Logan Cup. He hoped that they would will redeem battered pride by qualifying for the Pro50 Championship final and retain the Pro50 Championship Cup.
