FORMER Chicken Inn coach Mandla “Lulu” Mpofu returns to Barbourfields Stadium today carrying the confidence of a Simba Bhora side beginning to gather momentum in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League.
Mpofu’s in-form Simba Bhora face a tricky assignment against Chicken Inn, now under another familiar figure, Tonderayi Ndiraya, in what promises to be one of the exciting midweek fixtures.
The encounter brings together two coaches with deep connections to both clubs and adds another intriguing chapter to a growing rivalry between ambitious sides chasing consistency in the top flight.
Speaking ahead of the match, Mpofu struck a confident but cautious tone, acknowledging the difficult challenge posed by the Gamecocks while insisting his side is focused on continuing its impressive run of results.
“We are playing Chicken Inn and this is a tough match. Former league champions are meeting which makes it more exciting,” said Mpofu.
Simba Bhora head into the Bulawayo showdown with renewed belief after producing a string of positive performances that have strengthened their credentials as one of the league’s emerging forces this season.
“I coached Chicken Inn and their coach also coached Simba Bhora. Since I left Chicken Inn, they have greatly improved. They are now being coached by a man who has won back to back titles, meaning they are under the guidance of a top coach. However, we will not want to read much into our opponents’ but try and concentrate on our game plan,” added Mpofu.
His side has shown resilience, organisation and attacking intent in recent weeks, qualities that have steadily transformed Simba Bhora into a difficult team to break down.
But standing in their way is a wounded Chicken Inn side desperate for a response after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat away to MWOS in their previous outing.
Ndiraya, himself a former Simba Bhora coach, will be eager to inspire an immediate reaction from his players as Chicken Inn seek to rediscover the consistency that once made them one of the league’s most feared outfits.
Today’s fixture therefore carries more than just three points.
For Mpofu, it is another emotional return to Barbourfields, the venue where he once enjoyed memorable moments during his time with Highlanders and Chicken Inn. For Ndiraya, it is an opportunity to outwit the club he previously guided and halt Simba Bhora’s winning streak.
The tactical battle between the two experienced coaches will ultimately decide the contest.
Simba Bhora’s recent rise has been built around discipline and efficiency while Chicken Inn will be banking on home advantage and a strong response following last week’s setback.
With both teams eager to make a statement, a tense and highly competitive afternoon is expected at Barbourfields Stadium.
And with Mpofu returning to familiar territory in confident mood, the stage is set for another compelling chapter in Zimbabwean football’s ever-evolving coaching rivalries.-@FungaiMuderere
