Zimbabwean athletes start with a bang in Accra

ZIMBABWE sprinters started with a bang at the ongoing Senior African Championships at the University of Ghana Stadium yesterday.

Methembe Tshuma and Tapiwanashe Makarawu won their respective heats to qualify for the semi-finals, while Ngoni Makusha and female athlete Samukeliso Ndebele were third in their groups to make it to the next round.

Zimbabwe has sent a team of 12 sprinters and they are taking part in the 100m, 100m hurdles, 200m, 400m, 4x100m men and 4x400m as well.

Tshuma was first in Heathrow Three in 10.47 seconds, with the host nation’s Edwin Kwabla second in 10.65 and Zambian Justice Chivumbwa third in 10.69.

Makusha finished third in 10.69 seconds in Heat One in an event won by Koneshe Mojela in 10.54.

Makarawu finished first in his heat, but his time was not readily available, as was Ndebele’s for her third-place finish.

Thandazani Ndhlovu was the first among the 400m runners to make it when winning his heat. The semi-finals were to be run last night.
