TWO machete-wielding men have been accused of committing a spate of robberies in the Domboshava area.
Now, the duo is claiming they were severely assaulted by police when they appeared in court yesterday.
Farai Gomo and Ruvengo Sandalaki told Harare magistrate Dennis Mangosi that the police severely assaulted them, and the State was ordered to look into the allegations.
The court heard that on November 8, the two pounced on Alice Madembe, and her 12-year-old daughter, while they were in the lounge of their home at Matukutu Village under Chief Chinamhora in Domboshava .
They allegedly broke into the house, armed with iron bars and machetes.
Madembe and her daughter fled and locked themselves in the bedroom, but the two ordered them to open the door.
Madembe surrendered US$150, through an opening on the door, but the robbers continued demanding more money and threatened to break down the door.
She opened the door and they assaulted her and she surrendered US$50 and her cellphone.
The robbers then ransacked the house and stole 10 blankets, a gas tank and an assortment of groceries.
They locked Madembe and her daughter inside the house and left.
The two confessed to the robbery.
They also robbed Josphat Mudzimu at Makumbe Mission School.
The State said on November 13, the duo broke into Mudzimu’s bedroom at Makumbe Mission where he was sleeping with his wife.
They threatened to kill him and his wife with machetes, and demanded cash and valuables.
Mudzimu handed over his phone, US$63 and groceries.
They also stole 32-inch and 43-inch TV sets, five blankets and clothes.
During the robbery, Mudzimu’s wife managed to contact a neighbour, who called the police and they reacted swiftly.
The two tried to flee, but they were apprehended in a bushy area near the school.
