He has worked as assistant coach to both in the last three years.
In an exclusive interview soon after a one-wicket win over Southern Rocks at Kwekwe Sports Club, the Matabeleland-born and bred qualified Level Two coach said he did not expect much change when he takes over on an interim basis for two games.
“I have been assistant to Andy Waller and Jason for three years and basically with most of the players so I do not expect much change.
“With Gillespie we have set the same targets we are following and I am quite sure we will get there. We also have a good squad in terms of players.
“The only change that will be there will be the name change but in terms of coaching skills, ideas and game approach, it will be the same. We should be able to carry the day,” said Mahachi.
Undoubtedly one of the most successful coaches with the Under-14 and Under-16 national teams, he said he would attempt sending fringe players to England for exposure.
“If you look at some players that have come through, Richard Muzhange has done well with Neville Madziva and this is encouraging for our future.”
As a player Mahachi played for Matabeleland Under-19s before turning out for the first team in the Logan Cup. He then went to the Cricket Academy before spending six months in Surrey, England, playing for Brook.
Upon his return he rekindled his relationship with Matabeleland before suffering a back injury.
As a coach he was assistant to Phil Simmons in 2004 and took charge of the Zimbabwe Under-14s, which never lost a game in the South African series before landing the same success with Zimbabwe Under-16s in Namibia and South Africa.
He was also in charge of the Zimbabwe A team against Bangladesh during the warm-up series last year.
Meanwhile, Riki Wessels, Gary Balance, Malcom Waller and Steve Marillier inspired Midwest Rhinos to a seven-wicket win in a four-day Castle Logan Cup match played at Kwekwe Sports Club.
