THEY call her the Iron Lady of the creative arts industry and Mahwindo is a woman on a mission to take events management to another level.

Her real name is Wanisayi Mutandwa.

She also runs a charity organisation under The Mahwindo Foundation.

During the Covid-19-induced lockdown, she was on the frontline as she provided food hampers to artists who were stuck at home.

Mahwindo is one of the few female promoters still thriving in a challenging environment.

The others include Barbara Chikosi of Red Rose Promotions, Nancy Manyaya (Presdom Promotions), and Kare “Mai Jojo” Madake of Venus Promotions.

What sets Mahwindo apart is her ability to succeed and remain relevant in a male-dominated field.

Alongside Chimbodza and Hozheri, she is exchanging notes with other prominent promoters, including Tich Mharadze of Odyssey Entertainment, Benjamin Nyandoro, Dee Nosh, Werras Entertainment, and Nigel Chinovhiringa of Tamba Events, among others.

In an interview yesterday, Mahwindo revealed she is now doing what she enjoys the most.

“I always say that arts is business and this is what I have been longing for over the years – to leave an impression in this sector.

“For one to be called an arts promoter or events planner, they need this kind of set-up where one has the space to operate from.

“In my case, it was quite an honour to open this facility, and we started on a flier with Suluman Chimbetu. This gives me the drive to push beyond our boundaries and be counted among others.”

She added:

“We can only grow wiser by consulting each other in this profession. I am someone who believes in shared success and teamwork.”

On Saturday, Mahwindo hosted Suluman Chimbetu, who is currently celebrating 20 years in the music industry, at her new joint, Maka’s Sip N Eatery, in Harare.

The event was also attended by leading music promoters Josh Hozheri and Partson “Chipaz” Chimbodza.

Sulu praised  Mahwindo.

“It’s encouraging that we have female players championing our cause and I have always supported Mahwindo. She is the Iron Lady of showbiz who has been in the game for some time.

“She deserves her flowers now.”

He added:

“Female arts promoters should be firm and resolute, of course there are challenges associated with this industry but I urge them to be stronger.”
