THIS coming Sunday sees the staging of the final round of the seven-series Zimbabwe Main Circuit Racing National Championship in Harare. The Hamish Cameron-sponsored event is being held at Toyota’s Donnybrook Raceway. It is expected that both drivers and riders from Harare and Bulawayo will enter this decider and it has been confirmed that the young 15-year-old motorbike sensation from South Africa, Cameron Aitken, will be racing.
Although both motorcycle championships have already been decided with veteran Phil “Archie” Archenoul taking the unlimited class and Tiffany Fisher the Bokomo Weet-Bix Meggelli class, there will still be at least 20 riders out on the day to claim the race honours. In the unlimited class, Dave Mouat and Les Carlson should push Archenoul who will have his hands full staying ahead of Aitken, who is young enough to be his grandson.
Although Fisher has won the championship, multiple champion Shaun Whyte will provide the entertainment on the day with his skills.
In the hotly-contested unlimited saloons, Darryl Archibald is currently leading Kevin Allmark. Richard “Mahobho” Robinson in his fast turbo charged Corolla, Barney Rogers in his Rotary Mitsuibishi and Ian Howden in his new Kit car, sponsored by Shield, will be fighting to show that they are the kings of the track on the day.
In the 2-litre class, Toyota-sponsored Hilton Harunavamwe will be hoping to take the championship ahead of the consistent Dimitrios Zevgolis and Julian van Vuuran, both from Bulawayo. The biggest field of the day should be the 1600cc saloon car class with at least 10 competitors including the much-awaited motorcycle powered mini kit car owned by Arthur Browel which some are saying is going to be the fastest car, bar none around Donnybrook, on Sunday.
Denzil Bhana and Bob Beaver both have the conventional minis and it will be interesting to see if they can keep up with the new car. Harare’s Steve Murton has already won this National Championship in his beautifully prepared car but will certainly not have a free ride to the winner’s podium on the day.
In the unlimited sports car class, Barney Rogers, in his Guard Alert-sponsored Super 7, should once again show the way for schoolboy Fanie Van Der Linde in a similar rotary powered 7 ahead of Eric Heard in his Yamaha powered 7. Once again the race sponsors, father and son John and Brett Cameron from Hamish Cameron are fighting neck and neck for the 1600 championship and father John is currently one point ahead with all to play for on Sunday.
Practice on Sunday is on from 8am with racing starting at 12noon. Entrance is $5 per person (children under 12 get in for free) and there is full bar, catering and children’s entertainment in the form of jumping castles.
