adminThe club’s manager, Sean Connor, confirmed at his weekly media conference that the former Hwange defender, who has been training with the club for almost a month, finally signed a two-year deal.
Connor was reluctant to discuss Marere’s fate. The Northern Irishman had earlier indicated that Marere had impressed him at their training sessions after the former Dynamos forward landed at CAPS United when he fell out of favour at FC Platinum.
There were complications, though, as Marere was still contracted to Division One side, Highfield United, while he also needed a clearance from FC Platinum.
Connor revealed last week that they were looking at the two players in a bid to fill the remaining slot in the squad that they submitted to PSL last week. The deadline for the registration of players has been set for the end of business today.
But CAPS United still managed to get good quality in Moyo, who becomes the third defender to be signed by the Green Machine this year after Luckson Kaisa and Blessing Zebula.
Connor said he was impressed by the coming in of the experienced centreback to bolster their defence which also has such players as David Sengu, Nyasha Mukumbi and Tawanda Munyanduri.
“We have signed Moyo on a two-year contract. I believe he is a good acquisition who will add quality to our side,” said Connor.
“Obviously his arrival will bring competition in the team but players should not be afraid of compe tition.
“We need that competition and good players worldwide thrive on competition,” said Connor.
Makepekepe will open their league campaign next week away in Zvishavane against Shabanie Mine before coming home for a date with Chicken Inn in their second game.
One of the senior players, David Sengu, who is tipped for the captain’s armband this year, said the Green Machine are ready to challenge for honours. CAPS finished sixth last season and are eager to end a six-year drought by winning the championship.
Sengu acknowledges the intensity of the task ahead of them and stressed the need to begin on a sound note.
He said the league promises to be highly competitive this year.
“I think we are now ready because we have been preparing for the past 11 weeks,” said Sengu.
“It’s everyone’s dream to win something and I believe if you want to win the championship you have to start building on the dream now because every point counts.
“Winning the first games is always crucial because it eases pressure.
“Just like any other team we want to do well. You don’t have to wait until the last games or for other teams to do it for you.
“But talking about the championship at this point is a bit too early because we haven’t kicked the ball yet.
“We just have to treat each game as it comes and right now our focus is on Shabanie Mine.”
The former Zimbabwe international, while promising maximum effort from his teammates to win games this year, also appealed to the club’s supporters to rally behind the team even on the days when chips are down.
“Every game has pressure and we have to handle it. It’s a fact the supporters always want positive results and we as the players also want to win every game.
“It’s always 11 versus 11 on the pitch but the supporters can make a difference on the terraces as the 12th man,” said Sengu.
