MALARIA has killed 360 people in the country since January this year, the Ministry of Health and Child Care said yesterday. Of the 360, four have died so far this month, the ministry’s weekly disease surveillance report revealed. The deaths were reported in Mutare (one) and Nyanga district (one), Mwenezi (one) and Bulawayo (one).
The ministry said 200 000 malaria cases were recorded throughout the country this year alone. The statistics show that 1 347 were reported in one week.
“Of the cases reported in week 31, 297 and no deaths were reported among children under the age of five years,” reads the report.
The highest cases were reported in Mashonaland Central (400) and Manicaland (397).
More than 2 000 malaria cases were also reported across the country during the week ending July 5.
Of these, 510 were recorded from children under the age of five. Last year, 515 people died from malaria in June while 425 000 cases were reported countrywide.
