A 22-year-old Beatrice man who attacked a Nyau troupe after it had abducted his young brother and coerced him to join the group was last Thursday sentenced to 310 hours of community service. Joan Lundu (22) of Yolk Farm, who is employed as a general hand at Dunolly Farm, was angered by the forced recruitment of his younger brother as a Nyau dancer.
Lundu, on December 4, stormed the base at which the new recruits were being initiated by Sikariot Mavhuto (36) and his two companions of Dunluce Farm in the same area.
One Sauro Sauro had tipped Lundu of the desination of the recruits.
The court heard that after receiving the information, Lundu went to the pit where those initiated into the Nyau tradition met in order to preside over the initiation ceremony. In a fit of rage, Lundu called his brother without seeking permission from those present.
The court heard that his brother did not respond under instruction from his recruiters. On realising that his efforts were in vain, Lundu picked up some bricks and shurled them at the Nyau members in the pit.
As a result, Sikariot and his two companions came out of the pit and warned Lundu to stop, but he did not take heed. The court heard that Lundu, armed with a metal object, struck Sikariot on the left arm and fled. Sikariot sustained a broken elbow and he reported the matter to the police leading to Lundu’s arrest.
Appearing before Chitungwiza magistrate Ms Jessy Kufa, Lundu pleaded guilty to assault charges.
He was slapped with a 15-month jail term with five moths suspended for five years. The remaining 10 months were commuted to community service.
Mr Edmond Ndambakuwa prosecuted.
