A CHIKANGA man bit his wife on the right ear after she had bitten him on his left thumb. Office Kariwa allegedly attacked his wife, Ruby Kariwa, resulting in the two biting each other. He denied the charges when he appeared before senior Mutare magistrate Mrs Sekai Chiundura and the matter was remanded to November 3 for trial.
Mrs Chiundura told Office that the law does not force people to plead guilty.
“We do not force people to plead guilty. All the same, your case will go to trial and witnesses will be called. The truth shall come out,” said Mrs Chiundura.
In an unrelated case, bashing his third wife saw a Sakubva polygamist being fined $150 by a Mutare court.
Norman Mavhurudza (31) of Muchena, Sakubva, appeared before Mrs Chiundura facing domestic violence and assault charges after he assaulted his third wife, Tendai Rwatininda (20), over a dispute involving their children.
Mavhurudza, who has three wives, was convicted on his own guilty plea. He was ordered to pay $150 fine, which is to be paid before October 31 or risk being imprisoned for three months.
Mrs Chiundura also advised him to stop treating his wives as punching bags.
“Go and join boxing if you can’t live without fighting. The country is in need of professional boxers. You will become a celebrity and get a lot of money. You deserve a stiffer penalty since you put the law into your own hands and decided to discipline your wife,” she said.
The court heard on October 15, Mavhurudza called Rwatininda telling her that her child was troubling his first wife’s child and they had to settle it as adults.
“Rwatininda came to Muchena and she was assaulted by her husband resulting in her sustaining serious injuries,” said Mr Cuthbert Bhosha, prosecuting.
She was medically examined and in her medical report the doctor noted that she had sustained serious injuries. Her left eye was swollen and she broke her right arm after she fell on the tarred road as he was beating her up. Asked why he committed the offence, Mavhurudza told the court that he was disciplining her because she had fought his other wife.
“She came and fought my other wife who is pregnant, Your Worship. I had to teach her never to assault my other wives again,” said Mavhurudza.
