Man evades paying maintenance

A HARARE man has been evading paying maintenance claiming he shared the same responsibility with his former wife.

Mary Mukuto, 27, and Francis Murewa, 35, appeared before Harare Civil Court magistrate Judith Taruvinga.

Mary was claiming $30 000 for the upkeep of their minor child.

She told the court Francis was not playing his role as a father.

“Since the child was born, he never did anything to support his kid and when I tried to consult him, he assaulted me,” she said.

In response, Francis argued that $30 000 was beyond his means.

“Me and Mary are equal, if the children are living at Mary’s place, and being supported by their mother, l don’t see anything wrong with that.

“I don’t have money these days so she can take the responsibilities on my behalf, “ he said.

Magistrate Taruvinga ordered him to pay $25 000, with effect from July 30.
