Gwena allegedly teamed up with Kizito Wachenuka who has since been convicted of the same crime, Tapiwa Kawara and Nathan Naka who are still at large, on February 9 to defraud Tafadzwa Kamuchanyu.
Prosecutor Courage Manyengavana said Gwena and his team called Kamuchanyu on his mobile phone lying that they owned a mine and were selling some gold.
The following day Kamuchanyu in the company of his brother Sam and friend Oliver Munyoro went to Guruve where they met Gwena and his accomplices at Dendere Sports Bar Complex.
Gwena told Kamuchanyu and his team to go to the nearby Guruve Primary School football pitch where the transaction would be carried out. At the football pitch, Wachenuka produced counterfeit gold from his stockings and handed it to Gwena who assisted Kamuchanyu to weigh it and it weighed 50,7 grams.
Kamuchanyu then paid US$1 700 for the “gold” and went back to Harare.
Manyengavana said Kamuchanyu only discovered that he had been defrauded after he approached a jewel shop owner in Harare who had better knowledge of gold. Kamuchanyu drove back to Guruve the following day to hunt for Gwena and his accomplices.
While driving along the Guruve-Kachuta Road at Nyangavi Business Centre Kamuchanyu met a Nissan Hardbody whose occupants included Gwena and his accomplices. Kamuchanyu followed the vehicle.
On realising that they were being followed Kawara jumped out of the moving car and ran away while Kamuchanyu and his team were pursuing him, Gwena told the driver to get away from the scene.
Gwena was arrested on February 16 in Raffingora and only US$60 was recovered. — New Ziana.
