Policeman faces kidnap charges

businessman Mr Jerome Okeke when he appeared before Harare magistrate Ms Anita Tshuma.
He was remanded in custody to March 5 and advised to apply for bail at the High Court.
Zuze is based at Harare Central Police Station where he does charge office duties.
Prosecutor Mr David Magwegwe alleges that on February 4 this year at about 5:30pm Zuze teamed up with four other policemen, who are still at large, two civilian males one of whom posed as a magistrate and a female companion Synodia Moyo already in custody.
They allegedly went to Borrowdale Police Station and asked Constable Marichi to escort them to Mr Okeke’s residence in Borrowdale Brooke.
It is alleged they wanted to arrest him on a criminal charge reported at Harare Central Police Station. Constable Marichi complied and they went to Mr Okeke’s residence.
They told Mr Okeke that he was under arrest for an undisclosed offence and he refused to be arrested. The cops allegedly forcefully handcuffed the businessman and bundled him into their vehicle while assaulting him with baton sticks.
He told the policemen that the matter had already been reported and taken to court for scrutiny.
However, the policemen did not listen to the businessman.
Zuze and his accomplices allegedly dropped Constable Marichi at Borrowdale Police Station and proceeded to Harare Central Police Station against the complainant’s will, depriving him of his personal liberty and freedom.
It is alleged they further assaulted him on the way to the police station.
The State says the policemen failed to detain Mr Okeke after a police detail on duty advised them that the matter was a civil one.
They were also advised that the matter was pending in court so he could not be re-arrested on the same charges.
Mr Okeke filed a report with the police leading to Zuze’s arrest.
